How to Prepare for a Tattoo: A Guide by Anna, Manager of Ink Zu Tattoo Studio

admin

Hello, Tattoo Enthusiasts!

My name is Anna, and I am the proud manager of Ink Zu Tattoo Studio located in Sydney. We often receive enquiries about how to prepare for your tattoo appointments to get the best out of your session, and ensure you’re physically ready. Here are some tips I’ve gathered from years of experience.

Get A Good Night’s Sleep

First, make sure you get a good night’s sleep before your tattoo session. Going to bed earlier than usual can help calm those pre-appointment nerves, keeping you alert during tattooing. Being well-rested is crucial in reading your body’s signals and preventing you from falling asleep during your session.

Keep Yourself Hydrated

Hydration is often underestimated but plays a significant role in your tattoo experience. In the 24 hours following your appointment, make it a goal to drink at least eight 250ml glasses of water. I always keep a big bottle of water with me when I get tattooed and try not to drink too much coffee before my session. Well-hydrated skin contributes to your overall health and ensures a smoother tattooing process, as hydrated skin accepts ink more efficiently.

Grooming & Skin Preparation

Shaving

If your tattoo area has hair, shave it 2-3 times a week before your appointment. This prepares the skin and makes it easier for our artists to work their magic. If shaving the area feels daunting, don’t stress! Our artists will shave the area before starting work anyway.

Exfoliation and Moisturising

Let’s remember the importance of exfoliation! It helps open your pores and aids your moisturiser by reducing the skin’s workload. Leading up to your session, moisturize 1-2 times a day for 5-7 days. Remember, no moisturising on the tattoo day! Fresh, clean skin is what we want!

Personal Hygiene

Make sure you shower before your appointment to ensure your skin is clean for tattooing. Also, avoid going to the gym or working up a sweat before coming for your tattoo; you should be clean and dry before your appointment.

Bring Lots of Your Favourite Snacks!

Eating a good meal before your tattoo session is one of the best things you can do to keep your energy levels up. If facing a more extended session, bring your favourite snacks. For those with low blood sugar, having a piece of fruit, a granola bar, or cookies can be particularly helpful.

Make Sure You Dress Comfortably

Wear loose, comfortable clothing so that you’re comfortable sitting through your session. Avoid restrictive outfits, as comfort prevents itching and overheating.

What To Avoid Before Getting a Tattoo

Don’t Drink Alcohol!

Showing up under the influence of alcohol or drugs is a big no-no. It can lead to complications and jeopardise your safety during the session. Also, avoid aspirin or blood-thinning medications to ensure a smooth tattooing process. If you have any questions about the medication, you are taking or need advice before your session, you can ask either myself or your artist when you arrive at the studio.

Avoid Damaged Skin

If your skin has cuts, bruises, burns, or is peeling from sunburn, consider postponing your tattoo appointment. Damaged skin prevents the healing process and can lead to complications. Let us know at the studio with plenty of notice so we can reschedule later.

Hands Off Your Tattoo or Station

Refrain from touching the tattoo or the artist’s station to maintain a sterile environment. If you’re not feeling well, let your artist know when you arrive.

Avoid Last-Minute Cancellations

Emergencies happen, but please let us know about changes in your arrival time as soon as possible. Last-minute cancellations can disrupt our schedule, affecting other artists and clients.

During Your Tattoo

Entertainment

Bring your phone and headphones to stay entertained during the session. You can watch Netflix, read, or listen to music or podcasts. But please avoid activities that disrupt your artist’s workflow so that you can enjoy your experience as much as possible.

Bring a Friend

Friends and family are more than welcome at Ink Zu. However, to maintain a relaxed environment, avoid bringing large groups. For those with children, make sure they don’t disrupt the session. Being well-prepared enhances your experience and your tattoo’s outcome. After the appointment, remember to listen to our artist’s aftercare guidelines for the best results.
